Rev. Howard Thurman (1899- 1981) was a visionary leader, theologian, and spiritual mentor whose profound teachings shaped the Civil Rights Movement and continue to inspire us today. As a mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Thurman introduced a deeply personal and transformative approach to justice, emphasizing nonviolence, inner healing, and the essential dignity of every individual.
Thurman believed that true societal transformation begins with personal restoration—that each person has a role in advocating for their own wholeness and well-being.
Inspired by the legacy of Thurman and other luminaries like Dr. Emilie M. Townes and Dr. Monica A. Coleman, COMMONUNITY seeks to shift the paradigm. We nurture holistic well-being, knowing that when individuals thrive, communities flourish. Together, we embody Thurman’s belief that healing, love, and justice are the foundations for a more connected and compassionate world.
"Wherever there is love between men, there is a tiny bit of healing in the brokenness of the world."
